Firstly, I want to touch on the similarities to Alabasta that this arc shares before going on to talk about this amazing episode. An obvious parallel is the overtaking of a kingdom through the background as Crocodile and Doflamingo both attempted, both of which ended up taking the king hostage and trying to ruin his image. Both of them have revolutionaries fighting back as major characters, and both are the culmination of smaller islands leading to the bigger island, featuring recurrent casts and recurrent villains. We have the Straw Hats all taking different initiatives in this battle and playing large parts in freeing the kingdom and the enemies even have similarities too. Machvise seemed to have a similar weight power to Miss Valentine, Gladius seems to have an exploding power of some kind like her partner did. Sugar is similar to Miss Goldenweek and her partner Trebol, who produces sticky slime somewhat like Galdino’s wax, should end up fighting in a team fight like those two did. Further, Zoro is facing the 2nd biggest threat of the enemy organization whose entire body consists of something difficult to deal with and in both cases he states “I will cut steel/stone”. I had also remarked earlier that Giolla was this evil artist who turned people into a wall of art which slowly killed them while preaching about how beautiful they would become, this is what Galdino did on Little Garden. Then we have some odd connections between Doflamingo and Crocodile to possibly pursue. The point of this is to say that it feels purposeful to me and I’m probably even forgetting some other great similarities between the two arcs.
Anyways, onto the episode. Trebol’s attack may have been overkill but he sacrificed the tower to protect Sugar and it was a darn good call. It took everyone out and by the time Usopp came to by Robin’s side, the Tontatta were captured and interrogated to understand the soldier and Usoland’s role in all of this. To top it off, I thought Trebol was lying about the flammable goo to force Robin or Usopp’s hand thus revealing themselves but that wasn’t it at all, Trebol brutally disposed on the Tontatta after interrogating them.
It made for a montage of all of the people sacrificing themselves for this cause, all the pain, sorrow, and hope involved. We saw Leo, the gullible Tontatta, refuse to fall for Usopp telling him that they must retreat. We saw his insistence on making sure their side of things succeeds because, if not, then they let the others down. We saw this same admirable commitment from soldier and his Tontatta, the one’s on the soldier’s side sacrificed themselves for him and the mission to take Doffy down. Both sides of this plan are necessary and both are resolved on winning this fight. Beyond that, we saw through the soldier’s eyes the pain everyone felt when the news that Doflamingo’s withdrawal was an error. As Rebecca said, “our hopes dropped from heaven to the edge of hell”. The slave gladiators, the enslaved Tontatta, the forgotten toys, the old king and his guards. Why this would be enough to ignite their fighting spirit once more is no surprise.
Maybe it’s me understanding the soldier’s pain with Rebecca and vice versa, or seeing Riku and the kingdom get torn apart by Doflamingo in the most horrific way possible, maybe it was spending time with the enslaved gladiators or seeing the Tontatta’s will to die for their cause, or maybe it was seeing the toys who play the part or get thrown away. Or rather, perhaps it was everything coming together, but I have been totally sold on their cause, I was bawling my eyes out this episode like none before. Everything just clicked, and with that we finally got the reveal on Kyros. Kyros was thought to be a made up image that the gladiators made for a false sense of hope. Yet, the connection between the soldier, Riku, Rebecca, and Kyros has always been floating above us. Kyros being Riku did not make sense, but now, to tell us the soldier is Kyros, with Rebecca’s wistful gaze his statue earlier, all makes too much sense.
However, it wasn’t only the people of Dressrosa I felt for and was rooting for, it was also Usopp. It hit me that Usopp still doesn’t see this as his fight. Perhaps if Robin wasn’t here to be the backbone of the duo he wouldn’t be so eager to show his cowardice. Yet to see Leo and the Tontatta face Trebol and Sugar knowing the risk when he was afraid to go near, to see Leo refuse to give up even after taking that explosion, and to hear their resolve as they fight for the man who has been fighting alone for a decade, for the toys, the kingdom and for Rebecca, Usopp has to open his eyes. This is the time a brave warrior of the sea would fight, a brave warrior of the sea would feel it necessary to carry the torch of these people sacrificing themselves for their freedom. And with Leo holding the spicy grape as if the torch itself to pass on, I’m getting the feeling that Usopp finally has to face this truth. That no matter how dangerous it is, no matter if this isn’t his battle, that if he doesn’t fight here then he’s not the man he wants to be. And that’s powerful.
Lastly, the colosseum went a bit crazy, Bartolomeo has become Rebecca’s bodyguard after Diamante showed off the flagged club he had in a badge and bashed her head in. But more importantly, Diamante has brought up some serious details about Scarlet’s death and it reminded me that his face was one of the men pursuing Rebecca and Scarlet in the flashback. It’s definitely making it sound like he was the one who killed her or at the very least he was there when it happened. If so, it’s only right if Rebecca is the one to take him out. I also have to wonder if Sugar really just forgot to give Kyros a contract. It’s plausible, him being the first toy, but there could be something more there. It must have hurt for Rebecca to tell Kyros that he wasn’t her parent and “Kyros” wasn’t real. |
